1. Balance of Trade :
The value of a country’s exports minus the value of its imports. Unless specified as the balance of merchandise trade, it normally incorporates trade in services, including earnings (interest, dividends, etc.) on financial assets.

2. Balance of Payments :
A list of all of a country’s international transactions for a given time period, usually one year. Payments into the country (receipts) are entered as positive numbers, called credits; Payments out of the country (payments) are entered as negative numbers called debits. A single numbers summarize all of a country’s international transactions: the balance of payments surplus.

3. MFN (Most Favoured Nation) :
The principle, fundamental to the GATT, of treating imports from a country on the same basis as that given to the most favoured other nation. That is, and with some exceptions, every country gets the lowest tariff that any country gets, and reductions in tariffs to one country are provided also to others.

4. Balanced Budget :
A government budget surplus that is zero, thus with net tax revenue equaling expenditure. A balanced budget changes in policy or behavior is one which a component of the government budget, usually taxes, is adjusted as necessary to maintain a balanced budget.

5. Balanced Growth of an Economy :
Growth of an economy in which all aspects of it, especially factors of production, grow at the same rate.

6. Bank Rate :The interest rate charges by a central bank to commercial banks for very short term loans.

7. Repo Rate :
Whenever the banks have any shortage of funds they can borrow it form RBI. Repo rate is the rate at which commercial banks borrows rupees from RBI. A reduction in the repo rate will help banks to get money at cheaper rate. When the repo rate increases borrowing form RBI becomes more expensive.

8. Reverse Repo Rate :
Reverse Repo rate is the rate at which RBI borrows money from commercial banks. Banks are always happy to lend money to RBI since their money is in the safe hands with a good interest. An increase in reverse repo rate can cause the banks to transfer more funds to RBI due to this attractive interest rates.

9. CRR (Cash Reverse Ratio) :
CRR is the amount of funds that the banks have to keep with RBI. If RBI increases CRR, the available amount with the banks comes down. RBI is using this method (increase of CRR), to drain out the excessive money from the banks.

10. SLR (Statutory Liquidity Ratio) :
SLR is the amount a commercial banks needs to maintain in the form of cash, or gold, or govt. approved securities (Bonds) before providing credit to its customers. SLR rate is determined and maintained by RBI in order to control the expansion of the bank credit.
Need of SLR:
With the SLR, the RBI can ensure the solvency of a commercial banks. It is also helpful to control the expansion of the Bank credits. By changing SLR rates, RBI can increase or decrease bank credit expansion. Also through SLR, RBI compels the commercial banks to invest in the government securities like govt. bonds.


Main use of SLR:
SLR is used to control inflation and propel growth. Through SLR rate the money supply in the system can be controlled effectively.

11. Fiscal Deficit :
A deficit in the government budget of a country and represents the excess of expenditure over income. So this is the amount of borrowed funds require by the government to meet its expenditures completely.

12. Direct Tax :
A direct tax is that which is paid directly by someone to taxing authority. Income tax and property tax are an examples of direct tax. They are not shifted to somebody else.

13. Indirect Tax :
This type of tax is not paid by someone to the authorities and it is actually passed on to the other in the form of increased cost. They are levied on goods and services produced or purchased. Excise Tax, Sales Tax, Vat, Entertainment tax are indirect taxes.

14. NOSTRO Account :
A Nostro account is maintained by an Indian Bank in the foreign countries.

15. VOSTRO Account :
A Vostro account is maintained by a foreign bank in India with their corresponding bank.

16. SDR (Special Drawing Rights) :
SDR are new form of International reserve assets, created by the International Monetary Fund in 1967. The value of SDR is based on the portfolio of widely used countries and they are maintained as accounting entries and not as hard currency or physical assets like Gold

its Person of the Year on Wednesday, GKsaying the Catholic Church’s new leader has changed the perception of the 2,000-year-old institution in an extraordinary way in a short time. The pope beat out NSA leaker Edward Snowden for the distinction, which the newsmagazine has been giving each year since 1927. The former Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected in March as the first pope from Latin America and the first Jesuit.
2. Ayurvedic doctor-turned-politician Raman Singh was today sworn in as the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh for the third consecutive term. Governor Shekhar Dutt administered him the oath of office in Raipur on Thursday. 61 year old Singh led BJP to victory for the third time in assembly polls. Raman Singh has become the fourth chief minister of Chhattisgarh that came into existence in November 2000.
3. After a landslide victory in Mizoram Assembly polls, Lal Thanhawla will be sworn in for a second consecutive term as the Chief Minister on Saturday. Lal Thanhawla (71) and members of his council of ministers will be administered the oath of office by Governor Vakkom B Purushothaman at a ceremony which would begin at 11 am at the Raj Bhavan in Aizawl, a communique said on Thursday.
4. Banks might adopt Aadhaar as additional authentication or move to EMV (Euro pay MasterCard Visa) chip and pin technology to ensure security in card-based payment transactions, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) suggested. The central bank also said that all new card present infrastructures must be enabled with EMV chip and Pin technology as well as Aadhaar acceptance. The notification is based on Gowri Mukherjee-headed working group’s recommendation. Mukherjee is the global head of digital marketing at Standard Chartered Bank.
5. Doha Bank has been granted the license to start its banking operations in India. The bank has been permitted to open a branch in Mumbai to provide full-scale banking services. This was announced by the Chairman of Doha Bank Board of Directors Sheikh Fahad Bin Mohammad Bin Jabor Al-Thani in Doha. Doha Bank now becomes the first Qatari bank to get the license from the Reserve Bank of India to start operations in India. The bank plans to start its operations soon as a Foreign Bank branch in the city of Mumbai. It will offer wholesale banking, retail banking, treasury and trade finance services.
6. Wipro has received the ‘2013 ESCAP-Sasakawa Award for Disability-Inclusive Business in Asia and the Pacific’, in the category ‘Disability-Inclusive Multinational Enterprise’. The award for Disability-Inclusive Business was established by ESCAP in cooperation with The Nippon Foundation (TNF) and the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD) to recognise and honour companies that have made a significant breakthrough in engaging and hiring people with disabilities in their daily operations. The award is an initiative that views persons with disabilities as an untapped workforce.
7. India and the UAE are set to sign an agreement for promotion and protection of bilateral investments. Bilateral Investment Protection Agreement (BIPA), to be signed next week in New Delhi, will provide a comprehensive framework to investors from both the countries, the outgoing Ambassador of India to the UAE M K Lokesh said on Sunday.
8. Afghan President Hamid Karzai arrived in New Delhi Thursday afternoon on a four day official visit to India. A press release issued by the President’s office in Kabul last evening said he will meet Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid and hold talks on various aspects of bilateral cooperation under the long term strategic partnership treaty between the two countries. Afghan President is also scheduled to meet the Indian business and industry leaders in Pune.
9. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd lost its case to have certain products by Apple Inc banned in South Korea Thursday when a Seoul court ruled the US manufacturer had not violated Samsung patents. Samsung in March 2012 filed for damages and a sales ban on some iPhone and iPad models, saying Apple had breached three patents on technology for handling and displaying text and messages from its flagship Galaxy product range.

Nearly 230 million children under the age of five around the world have never had their birth registered, which often means they will be barred from education, health care and social security, the UN children’s agency said. A report by UNICEF to mark its 67th birthday on December 11 said that globally it amounts to one in three children under five.
11. De Villiers dethrones Kohli from top in ICC ODI rankings. Star batsman Virat Kohli lost his top position to AB de Villiers while most of his teammates, barring skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, also slipped in the latest ICC one-day rankings issued on Thursday after the 0-2 series loss to South Africa. De Villiers is the third batsman from South Africa after Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla to head the Test and ODI batting tables at the same time, and the ninth player overall. Amla achieved the distinction in February this year when he topped the charts after the Johannesburg Test against Pakistan.
12. Saina Nehwal has lost to the World No.1 and Olympic Champion Li Xuerui of China in the Group-B match of BWF World Super Series finals Badminton Tournament. Li defeated Saina 21-9 and 21-14 in a match today. Yesterday in the opening match, Saina lost to Japan’s Minatsu Mitani 21-19, 22-24 and 19-21. 1. International Anti-Corruption Day is observed across the world on 9 December 2013 to raise awareness about the menace of GK Corruption and what people can do to fight it. The theme for the year 2013 is: Act against Corruption Today. The day is observed on December 9 each year to raise awareness about the corruption. The UN General Assembly by resolution of 58/4 of 31 October 2003 designated 9 December as International Anti-Corruption Day. This decision aimed to raise people’s awareness of corruption and of the role of the United Nations Convention against Corruption in combating and preventing it.
2. Miss Venezuela AlyzHenrich on 7 December 2013 was crowned with the pageant of Miss Earth 2013 at the Versailles Palace, Philippines. She was crowned with the pageant of Miss World by Tereza Fajksova, the Miss Earth 2012 from Czech Republic. This was the 13th edition of the annual Miss Earth. With this winning, AlyzHenrich has joined the roster of beauty queens and will be an ambassador for environmental preservation.

3. Congress retains power in Mizoram. After facing a debacle in four states, Congress on Monday received cheer in Mizoram where it stormed back to power for a second consecutive term capturing 22 of the 40 seats, while leading in four. The four-time Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla won from both Serchhip and Hrangturzo seats he had contested.
4. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with winning over 28 of the 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly elections on 8 December 2013 met the eligibility criteria of Election Commssion to become a State Party. The Aam Aadmi Party registered as a political party by the Election Commission in March 2013.
5. Sheila Dikshit, the Chief Minister of Delhi resigned from her post on 8 December 2013 after Congress party faced a defeat in the Delhi Assembly polls. She sent her resignation to the Lt Governor. Sheila Dikshit was defeated in her constituency in New Delhi from Arvind Kejriwal of Aam Aadmi Party by over 5000 votes. She has been the Chief Minister of Delhi three times. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with 28 seats has emerged as the second largest party in New Delhi in its debut elections after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
6. Ali Osman Taha, the Vice President of Sudan resigned to pave way for the new Government. Taha has been the first Vice President of Sudan, the second highest political party. He was the main negotiator of Sudan’s Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005, which led to the end of Sudanese Civil War. Taha has been replaced by Lieutenant General Bakri Hassan Saleh. The second Vice President selected is Hasbo Mohamed Abdulrahman and the parliament head is Alfateh Ezziddin.
7. Star India will replace Sahara as the title sponsor of the Indian cricket team, according to Gautam Roy, member, Board of Control for Cricket in India. The title sponsor takes effect from January 1. Sahara filed litigation against BCCI. So we did not consider them,” he told newspersons in an informal interaction.
8. PepsiCo India has roped in former Nokia senior executive D. Shivakumar to head the India region. He has been appointed as the Chairman and CEO of India region with immediate effect. He will be responsible for deploying the Rs 33,000 crore investment in India that PepsiCo announced last month. Meanwhile, Gautham Mukkavilli, current General Manager for PepsiCo India Beverages, has been named the senior Vice-President , Business Transformation – AMEA at PepsiCo.
9. Qatar has launched a free telephone number service meant for its citizens travelling to 82 countries. The first stage of the service covers 82 countries while the second will include a further 16 nations, the Information Systems and Technology Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
10. South Africa beat India by 134 runs to clinch ODI series. South Africa clinched the three-match ODI series against India by taking an unassailable 2-0 lead after registering a 134-run win in the second one-dayer in Durban on Sunday. Brief scores: South Africa: 280 for 6 in 49 overs (Quinton de Kock 106, Hashim Amla 100; Mohammed Shami 3/48);India: 146 all out in 35.1 overs (Suresh Raina 36; Lonwabo Tsotsobe 4/25, Dale Steyn 3/17).

Insurance giant Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) has decided to stop selling as many as 34 policies, including Jeevan Anand, Jeevan Madhur and Jeevan Saral, to comply with new regulatory guidelines. These policies are withdrawn in December as they are not in conformity with the provisions of new regulations on non-linked insurance products, linked insurance products and health insurance products, a senior LIC official said.

The course, developed by Paranjape Schemes (Construction) Limited, is built on one lakh square-feet area. Some of the main features of the course include 250-yard golf academy area with practice facilities and target greens, bunkers at 100, 150 and 200 yards; 2000 metres of cart path to connect each hole. Three lakes are also a part of this Golf Course.
13. Former Pakistan captain Waqar Younis and ex-Australia wicketkepeer Adam Gilchrist will be inducted into the ICC’s Hall of Fame next week. Waqar and Gilchrist become the 70th and 71st male members of the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. They will become the first two inductees of 2013-14, while two more names will be announced later this month.
14. Kerala emerged as the champion state in the 29th Junior National Athletics Championships which concluded on 7 December 2013. The championship was held at Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. Kerala ended the competition with a 585 score, way ahead of the second placed Tamil Nadu. Haryana was placed third. Significantly Kerala has been the champion for 19th time in the 29 year old history of the event.

1. International Anti-Corruption Day is observed across the world on 9 December 2013 to raise awareness about the menace of GK Corruption and what people can do to fight it. The theme for the year 2013 is: Act against Corruption Today. The day is observed on December 9 each year to raise awareness about the corruption. The UN General Assembly by resolution of 58/4 of 31 October 2003 designated 9 December as International Anti-Corruption Day. This decision aimed to raise people’s awareness of corruption and of the role of the United Nations Convention against Corruption in combating and preventing it.
2. Miss Venezuela AlyzHenrich on 7 December 2013 was crowned with the pageant of Miss Earth 2013 at the Versailles Palace, Philippines. She was crowned with the pageant of Miss World by Tereza Fajksova, the Miss Earth 2012 from Czech Republic. This was the 13th edition of the annual Miss Earth. With this winning, AlyzHenrich has joined the roster of beauty queens and will be an ambassador for environmental preservation.

These policies are withdrawn in December as they are not in conformity with the provisions of new regulations on non-linked insurance products, linked insurance products and health insurance products, a senior LIC official said.
